Strengthening the NIIN’s capability and impact in health and aged care
The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the vital importance of a resilient and adaptable healthcare system, serving as a catalyst for change in care models, funding decisions, and technology adoption. With the increasing demand and complexity of healthcare operations, digital solutions and innovation have become essential tools to reduce inefficiencies, improve access, enhance patient experiences, and maintain high-quality care. Investment in innovation and digital transformation is crucial, as failing to embrace these advancements could have detrimental effects on patient outcomes and the overall resilience of the healthcare system. To address these challenges and promote effective problem-solving, the NIIN Health Alliance strives to leverage collective health innovation capacity, foster collaboration, and facilitate the exchange of ideas within the health ecosystem, including universities, industry, healthcare providers and government.
The NIIN is a dynamic network that brings together government, industry and university partners to drive digital technology advancements in health. With its ready-to-access capability and existing infrastructure, the NIIN provides a low-risk avenue for health agencies and hospital operators to engage in innovation activities. Its six innovation centres, eight Research Chairs, two health-focused labs, and specialised technology centres serve as a collaborative hub for industry, health agencies, hospital operators, researchers, and students tackling critical healthcare challenges collectively using digital innovation.
The importance of scaling healthcare innovation is evident in today's dynamic and intricate healthcare landscape. To fully leverage the potential of the NIIN healthcare ecosystem, it is essential to establish a network of carefully selected partners with relevant capabilities, projects, contributions, and platforms. The NIIN Health Alliance aims to achieve three major outcomes:
The NIIN has delivered various instrumental projects relevant to healthcare, ranging from reports outlining opportunities to strengthen Australia’s healthcare system to in-field technology pilots addressing pressing healthcare challenges.
Health Robotics demonstrations to improve clinical and social outcomes. Demonstrations combine technical and social factors to identify ways robotics can be integrated into workflows.
The Health Transformation Lab’s new report, Transforming Aged Care, responds directly to the recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. It contends that the deep and systemic adoption of technology presents an opportunity to transform Australia’s aged care into a respectful, responsive and high-quality system.
Dynamic Healthcare Whitepaper, demonstrating how spaces need to be adaptable to changing demands and how to make health systems ‘anti-fragile’
