ここで使用したフレームリレーの設定では、ポイントツーポイントのサブインターフェイスを使用し、Open Shortest Path First(OSPF)をルーティング プロトコルとして使用していますが、これはこの設定例に特定した設定です。ただし、説明しているトラブルシューティング手順は一般的な内容であるため、使用するルーティング プロトコルに関係なく、さまざまな構成(フレームリレーのポイントツーマルチポイント、High-Level Data Link Control(HDLC; ハイレベル データリンク コントロール)のプライマリ リンク、Point to Point Protocol(PPP; ポイントツーポイント プロトコル)のカプセル化など)で使用できます。
バックアップ機能を確認するために、フレームリレー スイッチとして機能している Cisco 4500 ルータのインターフェイスの 1 つをシャットダウン状態にして、フレームリレー ネットワークで問題をシミュレートしました。この結果、フレームリレー ネットワーク経由で DTE ルータが PVC 非アクティブ状態になり、フレームリレー サブインターフェイス ダウン イベントが発生します。これによって、バックアップ インターフェイスがアクティブになっています。
