The documentation set for this product strives to use bias-free language. For the purposes of this documentation set, bias-free is defined as language that does not imply discrimination based on age, disability, gender, racial identity, ethnic identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and intersectionality. Exceptions may be present in the documentation due to language that is hardcoded in the user interfaces of the product software, language used based on RFP documentation, or language that is used by a referenced third-party product. This document provides a sample configuration for how to enable the Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA ) in order to accept dynamic IPsec connections from the IOS Router.
Before you attempt this configuration, ensure that both the ASA and Router have Internet connectivity for establishing the IPsec tunnel.
This document assumes that you have already assigned the IP addresses on both the public and private interfaces and that you are able to ping the IP address of the remote VPN device.
The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:
Cisco 2900 Router with Cisco IOS Software Release 15.2(4)M3
Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software version 9.4(1)
The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.
Refer to the Cisco Technical Tips Conventions for more information on document conventions.
The remote router performs Network Address Translation (NAT) if private network 10.1.1.x accesses the Internet. Traffic from 10.1.1.x to private network 10.2.2.x behind the ASA is excluded from the NAT process. The IPsec tunnel establishes only if the traffic (10.1.1.x) initates the connection from the router with the ASA that has a remote network (10.2.2.x). The router can initiate connections to the ASA, but the ASA cannot initiate connections to the router.
This configuration enables the ASA to create a dynamic IPsec LAN-to-LAN (L2L) tunnel with a remote VPN router. This Router dynamically recieves its outside public IP address from its Internet service provider. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) provides this mechanism in order to allocate IP addresses dynamically from the provider. This allows IP addresses to be reused when hosts no longer need them.
On the ASA you can configure a Manual NAT to ensure the traffic that goes through the tunnel does not get translated. In this example, if you are on the 10.2.2.0 network and go to the 10.1.1.0 network, the Manual NATis used to permit the 10.1.1.0 network traffic to be encrypted without being translated to the outside interface IP address. On the router, the route-map and access-list commands are used to permit the 10.1.1.0 network traffic to be encrypted without NAT. However, when you go anywhere else (like the Internet), you are translated to the outside interface IP address through Port Address Translation (PAT).
Note: Refer to Applying NAT for more information on NAT
These are the configuration commands required on the ASA in order for traffic not to run through PAT over the tunnel, and traffic to the Internet to run through PAT
object network LOCAL subnet 10.2.2.0 255.255.255.0 object network REMOTE subnet 10.1.1.0 255.255.255.0

In this section, you are presented with the information to configure the features described in this document.
