Cisco Network Convergence System (NCS) 540 Routers with the chassis product ID (PID) N540-24Q8L2DD-SYS will not boot when they are upgraded to Cisco IOS XR Release 7.8.x or 7.9.1.
Cisco IOS XR releases 7.8.x and 7.9.1 are configured with a specific BIOS version that has compatibility issues with Cisco NCS 540 Routers PID N540-24Q8L2DD-SYS.
Cisco NCS 540 Routers with the PID N540-24Q8L2DD-SYS will brick and become unresponsive after upgrading to Cisco IOS XR Release 7.8.x or 7.9.1
Cisco recommends upgrading Cisco NCS 540 Routers with the PID N540-24Q8L2DD-SYS to Cisco IOS XR Release of 7.9.2 that has the fix . It is recommended to avoid upgrading to IOS XR releases 7.8.x or 7.9.1 because backporting or recovering from the failure is not possible. For routers that are already impacted by the upgrade issue that is described in this field notice, a Return Material Authorization (RMA) can be initiated.
