Fans with new EEPROMs will not be recognized or function properly in Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers that are running older software. The fans in Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers use the EEPROM to store the product IDs (PIDs) of the fans and the description of the type of fan unit, such as port-side exhaust or air intake. These fans are field-replaceable units (FRUs).
The fans will not show in Cisco IOS XR Software if the EEPROM is not available or is incompatible. The fans in Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers require software SMU(s) to support the new EEPROM type. The fans with the new EEPROMs will not function until the SMU is loaded in the router. The fans that include this new EEPROM type will ship in April 2023. All new fans will ship from Manufacturing and will be stocked in the RMA Depots.
The PID for fans will remain the same. The new fans will use Hardware Version V02 IDs.
The fix is available by SMU or in Cisco IOS XR releases 7.8.2 and later as well as releases 7.9.1 and later.
Important: The production SMU is highly recommended for Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers that are running an affected release. If all fans in Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers use the new EEPROM and the SMU has not been applied, the affected routers may shut down.
The following Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers contain fans that use the new EEPROM:
A change in the EEPROM for the fans in Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers was required because of supply chain shortages.
The following symptoms will be seen in Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers that are not running the appropriate SMU or that have a chassis that is not running Cisco IOS XR Software Release 7.8.2 or later or Release 7.9.1 or later.
When a fan with the new EEPROM is inserted in Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers, the new fan will not be detected and the following entry will be reported in the syslog:
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:Feb 2 13:32:39.631 UTC: envmon[308]: %PKT_INFRA-FM-3-FAULT_MAJOR : ALARM_MAJOR :IDPROM read or CRC check failure :DECLARE :0/FT0: IDPROM read failed for FT0
Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers will shut down if all fans in the router use the new EEPROM. The following entry will be reported in the syslog:
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:Jan 30 23:40:07.924 UTC: envmon[215]: %PKT_INFRA-FM-2-FAULT_CRITICAL : ALARM_CRITICAL :Fan tray absent :DECLARE :0: 4 FTs present. Minimum 5 FTs required. System will shutdown in 120 seconds
The following options may be used to bring up Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers fans that have the new EEPROM.
Option 1: Upgrade to Cisco IOS XR Software Release 7.8.2 or later or Release 7.9.1 or later.
Option 2: Apply the appropriate SMU for Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers that are not running Cisco IOS XR Software Release 7.8.2 or later or Release 7.9.1 or later. The following table contains the SMUs that are aligned to the specific Cisco IOS XR Software releases.
Note: If the appropriate Cisco IOS XR Software release or SMU is loaded before the fan is replaced, the Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Router should not see any issue. Without the correct Cisco IOS XR Software or SMU, the replacement fans will not come up.
The following table includes links to .tar files that will take users to the Cisco Software Download site and the applicable software version page. Users must then search the page for the specific file name.
SMU Image Name/Link | SMU Reload or Non-Reload | Platform | Cisco IOS XR Release |
---|---|---|---|

All of the affected fan PIDs that ship with Hardware Version V02 or later need the software SMU(s) or a software upgrade to Cisco IOS XR Software Release 7.8.2 or later or Release 7.9.1 or later.
FAQs
Q. Will this impact Cisco 8000 Series Modular Routers?
A. No.
Q. Will this impact other platforms that run Cisco IOS XR Software?
A. This change applies to Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers only.
Q. How are fans that use the new EEPROM in Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers identified?
A. There is no PID level change. The version ID (VID) for the new fan will be changed to V02 (from V01). This will be reflected in the show inventory output and labeling.
Q. What is the impact of inserting a new fan into the Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Routers with the production SMU installed?
A. There is no impact.
Q. Will there be an impact if both new and old fans are mixed in a chassis?
A. There is no impact if the recommendations in the Workaround/Solution section have been implemented. If the SMU is installed, both types of fans will be detected. If the SMU is not installed, only the Hardware Version V01 fans will function. To function, the new Hardware Version V02 fans require the SMU or a software upgrade to Cisco IOS XR Software Release 7.8.2 or later or Release 7.9.1.
Q. Is there a PID change for fans that use the new EEPROM?
A. No.
Q. Will there be an impact if the SMU is installed in a modular chassis?
A. No.
Q. Are the new fans already being shipped to the customers?
A. New fans have not started shipping yet. The fans will start shipping in April 2023.
Q. Is there immediate action required by the customers?
A. No immediate action is required until the fans with the new Hardware Version V02 EEPROM start shipping from Manufacturing. The SMUs are currently available, so the fix can be proactively applied. Cisco 8000 Series Fixed Router will not see an impact until a new fan is inserted (with the new EEPROM) in the fixed chassis. Cisco recommends that customers schedule a maintenance window to install the SMU in order to avoid an impact in the future.
