CSCwa97427 | Upgrade to 4.2(2a) will fail for BSeries M5 Servers (BMC Image Oversize) |
After an upgrade to Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) Release 4.0(4m) Blade Bundle (B-Bundle) or earlier to blade Release 4.2(2a), a B-Series M5 blade might lose all management capabilities. The server will not be recoverable.
Only Cisco UCS M5 Blade Servers (B200-M5 and B480-M5) that run Release 4.0(4m) or earlier are susceptible to this defect. This issue does not impact Cisco UCS Fabric Interconnect or Cisco UCS C-Series Rack Servers when they have been upgraded to Release 4.2(2a).
When the blade firmware is upgraded to Release 4.2(2a) directly from Release 4.0(4m) or earlier, the update process will fail. From a Cisco UCS Manager GUI perspective, the blade will disconnect for an update and never become visible again, and the “invalid FRU: mismatch-identity-unestablishable”
message will be displayed. The server will become permanently unmanageable.
An example fault is shown here:

Do not upgrade Cisco UCS B-Series Servers directly to Release 4.2(2a) from Release 4.0(4m) or earlier.
If an upgrade to Release 4.2(2a) is required, complete these steps:
Note: If a server is upgraded from Release 4.0(4m) or earlier directly to Release 4.2(2a), it will become unrecoverable. There is no possibility of recovery from this upgrade failure. The blade will need to be replaced.
