CSCux11611 | Long drive idle period leads to hard failure |
In some rare circumstances an idle 3 1/2-inch Seagate drive might cause the lubrication to become depleted under the read head and lead to failure of the drive.
This problem only impacts C-Series Unified Computing Systems (UCSs) as they are the only systems that support 3 1/2-inch Seagate drives.

During extended idle periods or very low activity, the read/write head of 3 1/2-inch Seagate drives sits in a narrow physical location on the disk which can, in some rare circumstances, cause the lubrication to become depleted in that area. This can cause the drive head to crash or interaction with the platters. If that happens, the drive fails and recovery is not possible.
Cisco has observed different scenarios where this can occur. However, most of the failures appear to happen in new installations where the drives might sit idle for weeks or months at a time. HADOOP environments in Just a Bunch Of Disks/Drives (JBOD) (or single drive Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) sets) mode might be more susceptible to the issue.
Certain 3 1/2-inch Seagate drives might fail when accessed after a long idle period.
B-Series
These systems are not impacted as they do not support 3 1/2-inch Seagate drives.
C-Series Platforms via HUU
If your drive has not failed yet, you need to upgrade to firmware C007 or K0E5 (for model ST6000NM0014 only). This is a complete solution to the problem for UCS C-Series platforms. Download the appropriate file:

Note: Do not choose Update All with the Host Upgrade Utility (HUU). You do not want to upgrade any other component except for the hard drive(s). You only need to choose HDD Firmware Upgrade in order to complete this procedure.

General
If you have a failure and you have one of the affected Seagate model hard drives, you need to request a Return Material Authorization (RMA) and send back the drive. The hard drive will no longer work once it fails. Open a case with Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and they can assist you with that.
