In the ASR 1002-X Router, a watchdog timer might timeout while it verifies the hard drive which causes one or more reboots.
In the ASR 1002-X, a watchdog timer is used to detect a hardware or software hung condition. During system bootup, the Cisco IOS XE software enables the watchdog timer and periodically resets it in order to avoid expiration of the watchdog timer. If the watchdog timer is not reset periodically, it expires and results in a watchdog timeout. This condition reboots the system.
In the current ASR 1002-X that runs Cisco IOS XE 3.12, Cisco IOS XE 3.13.0 - Cisco IOS XE 3.13.5, Cisco IOS XE 3.14, Cisco IOS XE 3.15, Cisco IOS XE 3.16.0, Cisco IOS XE 3.16.1, Cisco IOS XE 3.17.0, Cisco IOS XE 3.17.1, and Denali 16.2 images, the watchdog timer is enabled before the hard disk drive (HDD) file system is checked. When the system checks the HDD during bootup, it might not complete the check before the watchdog timer expires and might cause the system to reboot.
The ASR 1002-X and bundles (refer to the Products Affected section) without HDD (MASR1002X-HD-160 or MASR1002X-HD-320) are NOT impacted.
If you have a ASR 1002-X Router with a HDD that reboots a few times, search for these messages highlighted in bold in order to see if you run into this issue.
