A vulnerability in TACACS+ and RADIUS remote authentication for Cisco NX-OS Software could allow an unauthenticated, local attacker to cause an affected device to unexpectedly reload.
This vulnerability is due to incorrect input validation when processing an authentication attempt if the directed request option is enabled for TACACS+ or RADIUS. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by entering a crafted string at the login prompt of an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the affected device to unexpectedly reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition.
Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.

This vulnerability affects the following Cisco products if they are running a vulnerable release of Cisco NX-OS Software with the directed request option enabled for TACACS+, RADIUS, or both:

- Nexus 3000 Series Switches (CSCwe72648)
- Nexus 5500 Platform Switches (CSCwe72674)
- Nexus 5600 Platform Switches (CSCwe72674)
- Nexus 6000 Series Switches (CSCwe72674)
- Nexus 7000 Series Switches (CSCwe72368)
- Nexus 9000 Series Switches in standalone NX-OS mode (CSCwe72648)
Note: This vulnerability can only be exploited over Telnet, which is disabled by default, or over the console management connection. This vulnerability cannot be exploited over SSH connections to the device.

Determine the Vulnerable Configuration
To determine if the directed request option is configured for TACACS+ or RADIUS, use the show running-config | include directed-request command. If the command returns tacacs-server directed-request or radius-server directed-request, the device may be affected by this vulnerability. The following example shows the output of the show running-config | include directed-request command on a device that has the directed request option configured for TACACS+:

Cisco has confirmed that this vulnerability does not affect the following Cisco products:
- Firepower 1000 Series

- Nexus 9000 Series Fabric Switches in ACI mode
- Secure Firewall 3100 Series
- UCS 6200 Series Fabric Interconnects

- UCS 6400 Series Fabric Interconnects
- UCS 6500 Series Fabric Interconnects

If the affected device reloads, the Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) portion of the configuration may be deleted, which would prevent valid users from authenticating. The AAA configuration would need to be manually reconfigured.

There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.
If directed request support for TACACS+ or RADIUS is not required, the CLI commands tacacs-server directed-request and radius-server directed-request can be removed from the configuration. If the commands are not present in the configuration, the device is not vulnerable.

Customers should not deploy any workarounds or mitigations before first evaluating the applicability to their own environment and any impact to such environment.

Cisco has released free software updates that address the vulnerability described in this advisory. Customers with service contracts that entitle them to regular software updates should obtain security fixes through their usual update channels.
Customers may only install and expect support for software versions and feature sets for which they have purchased a license. By installing, downloading, accessing, or otherwise using such software upgrades, customers agree to follow the terms of the Cisco software license:

In all cases, customers should ensure that the devices to be upgraded contain sufficient memory and confirm that current hardware and software configurations will continue to be supported properly by the new release. If the information is not clear, customers are advised to contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) or their contracted maintenance providers.
Customers Without Service Contracts

Customers should have the product serial number available and be prepared to provide the URL of this advisory as evidence of entitlement to a free upgrade.
Cisco NX-OS Software
To help customers determine their exposure to vulnerabilities in Cisco NX-OS Software, Cisco provides the Cisco Software Checker.
