A vulnerability in Cisco's Precision Video Engine (CVPE) code could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause the crash of various processes and the disconnection of any active calls.
The vulnerability is due to improper handling of crafted Real-Time Protocol (RTP) packets sent at a high rate. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted RTP packets to the affected system.
Cisco has confirmed this vulnerability in a security notice and released software updates.
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker may need access to trusted, internal networks to send crafted RTP packets to the device. This access requirement decreases the likelihood of a successful exploit.
Cisco indicates through the CVSS score that functional exploit code exists; however, the code is not known to be publicly available.

Administrators are advised to apply the appropriate updates.
Administrators are advised to allow only trusted users to have network access.
To mitigate DoS attacks, apply hardware rate limiter features to limit packets that require CPU processing. See vendor documentation for specific configuration instructions. For hardware rate limiting configuration details, see Cisco Catalyst 6500 Denial of Service (DoS) Protection Configuration Guide.
It is critical to prevent unauthorized direct communication to network devices. Restrict network traffic destined for the network infrastructure to protect against reconnaissance and DoS attacks. For configuration details, see Protecting Your Core: Infrastructure Protection Access Control Lists.
Administrators are advised to monitor affected systems.
