Cisco Systems® announces the end-of-sale and end-of life dates for the Cisco IOS Firewall Feature Set on the Cisco Catalyst 6500. Cisco will not have any future development on the firewall feature set beyond the Cisco IOS Software release 12.2SXF. These features will not be supported on the future releases starting from Cisco IOS Software Release 12.233SXH. The last day to order the Cisco IOS Firewall Feature Set is December 29, 2007. Customers with active service contracts will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) as shown in Table 1 of the EoL bulletin. Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the Cisco IOS Firewall Feature Set. Table 2 lists the product part numbers affected by this announcement.

Product Migration Options
The recommended replacement for the Cisco IOS Firewall Feature Set on the Cisco Catalyst 6500 is the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Firewall Services Module (FWSM). Migrating to the Firewall Services Module provides significant technology and operational management benefits, including:
• Superior performance of up to 5 Gbps throughput,100,000 connections per second and 1 million concurrent connections.
• The Cisco Catalyst 6500 can support up to four FWSMs within the same chassis providing a total of 20 Gbps of throughput.
• Being an integrated module installed inside a Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switch. The FWSM allows any port on the device to operate as a firewall port and integrates firewall security inside the network infrastructure.
• Efficiency and productivity gains: Virtualized FWSM delivers multiple firewalls on one physical hardware platform. Network administrators can configure, deploy, and manage these functions as if they were separate devices. Using virtualization to reduce the number of physical devices in a network significantly reduces the cost and complexity of managing network infrastructure.
Customers can use the Cisco Technology Migration Plan (TMP) to trade in products and receive credit toward the purchase of new Cisco equipment. For more information about Cisco TMP, go to

Customers may be able to continue to purchase the end-of-sale product through Cisco's Authorized Refurbished Equipment program.
